Where can I find the battery on my scooter or power wheelchair?
If you have a power wheelchair, there are two batteries. One is located under the seat, and one is located beneath the cowling. If you have a scooter, there are two batteries. Both are located under the seat.
How much time does it take to charge the battery?
For brand new units, we recommend charging for 10-14 hours the first few times you need to charge. Thereafter, you will need to charge your unit for 8-10 hours (overnight recommended) for average daily use. If you do not use your unit for a whole week, we recommend that charging for 8-10 hours.
Should I charge the battery in long or short increments?
It is fine to charge your unit for short or long periods of time. Charging for less than 8-10 hours will not harm the battery.
I've checked the battery and the indicator says it is fully charged. However, my unit will not work. Why?
First of all, make sure the power is on. If the unit is still not working, check the “freewheel” levers—a power wheelchair has two wheel levers and a scooter has one. If the wheel levers are disengaged, the unit will not work, because the wheels are disengaged from the motor. If this is the case, you will hear the motor running, but the unit will not move. If you see the wheel levers facing out, pull them in towards the unit.
You should also make sure the unit is not being charged or plugged into the wall. A power wheelchair or scooter will not move while it is still plugged into a wall.
Finally, you should check the circuit breaker, which is located next to the charger cord outlet, on the bottom back of the unit. A blown circuit breaker will stick out about ¼ to ½ inch. Resetting the circuit breaker is very easy—just push the breaker back in until it clicks. Find and press the button that says, "Press to reset." It is normal for the circuit breaker to trip occasionally, especially when operating on an incline or in the sand. If the problem recurs often, or if resetting the breaker does not work, please call us toll-free at 1-888-445-2111 and ask to speak to a technician.
I charged the battery for the recommended 8-10 hours, but the indicator does not show a full charge. Why?
Most likely, the battery has a bad cell and needs to be replaced. Please call a Customer Care Professional at 1-888-445-2111.
What is the battery’s average length of life?
You can expect your battery to last 1-2 years, depending on several factors, including daily usage, terrain, charging frequency, and the user's weight. When you need a new battery, just call a Customer Care Professional at 1-888-445-2111.
How will I be able to tell if my battery is running low?
There is an indicator located at the top of the control panel, which is on the arm of the scooter or power wheelchair. When the battery gets low, a yellow indicator light will go on. We recommend charging the unit when the first or second battery indicator is lit yellow. When the battery gets very low, the indicator lights will begin flashing to alert you to charge immediately.
What do the battery indicator lights mean?
The indicator lights on the control panel tell you about the battery’s status. There are 10 lights: three green indicate full battery, three yellow indicate intermediate battery, and three red indicate low battery. **SS.com sic. I’m counting 9, not 10…need clarification here.
What should I do if my unit gets wet and will not run?
Allow your power wheelchair or scooter to dry out thoroughly before powering on again. If the unit still does not work , please call a Customer Care Professional at 1-888-445-2111.
What should I do if my unit becomes overheated and will not run?
There is a maximum operating temperature for the motor on all units (122 degrees F for power wheelchairs and 115-122 degrees F for scooters). The motor contains a sensor mechanism that will detect if the operating temperature has exceeded the maximum level, and the mechanism will begin to reduce power (5 volts for every degree above the maximum operating temperature). The sensor will cause the unit’s motor to run much slower and, for your safety, the unit may even come to a complete stop. If this happens, please allow the unit to cool off. When the motor has cooled down to a safe operating temperature, the sensor mechanism will allow your unit be fully functional again. If the unit continues to overheat, please contact a Customer Care Professional at 1-888-445-2111.
I’m trying to charge my power wheelchair or scooter but the battery doesn't appear to be charging. Why?
First, make sure that the charger is plugged into a working outlet. If a wall switch controls the outlet, make sure it is turned on. Also check to see that the plug is inserted all the way into the electrical outlet.
Check the amp meter, which can be found next to the circuit breaker on the back of the unit. The amp meter needle should move up when the charger is plugged into the outlet and the battery is being charged. If you’ve followed this checklist and charging problems persist, please contact a Customer Care Professional at 1-888-445-2111.
